This goes out to all my real hip-hop headz. It's a conversation my boys and I have been having alot lately. Alot of people are doin Holy Hip-Hop or Christian rap or whatever the latest vernacular of the day for it is. And no disrespect to anyone, but the problem as a long time hip-hop head and self proclaimed professional hip-hop junkie is there aren't too many really dope emcees spitting over bangin beats when its comes to Christanity.
Look at the early '90s Muslims and 5 Percenters where kicking knowledge, wisdom and understanding over classic beats, look at Brand Nubian, Poor Righteous Teachers, Rakim and too many others to name. Classic hip-hop joints, that will go down in history as some of the best hip-hop ever made. But where are the Christian Rakims and Brand Nubian spitting over Premier type beats.
I mean don't get me wrong I respect what's goin on, anyone reppin for Christ and admit things have to start somewhere but to really capture the youth in this what-have-you-done-lately-low-attention-span-gangsta-infested era of hip-hop, the kids are tryna hear what the holy hip-hoppa is kicking.
Just because its Christian Rap, why can't it be great hip-hop, classic joints. I don't know what the answer it, we need to raise the bar, convert some great secular emcees or what but the way Brand Nubian and Rakim spit over them headnoddas and had everyone singing the 5 percent teachings even if most didn't have a clue what it was all about. Thats what I need to hear from my Christian emcees, joints that are so incredible commercial and underground rap radio and club and mixtape DJs can play between the current chart toppers that are screaming about rims, jew-els and living out their gangsta fantasies. We will never compete until we up the bar. I'm sure there are many Christains that were dope emcees and lyricist before they gave their lives to Christ. Back then you spit over the hardest beats, what happened, where did we get lost in translation!
I pray this provokes much discussion and no emcee or rapper out there takes offensive. This is not a dis but a call for some real hip-hop. Why are we not giving our best for Christ! I'm searching not finding many that really really move me, someone if they are out there please point a brother in the right direction, peace to Sean Slaughter - Man on Fire and a cat that calls himself the Rap Terrorist, Im sure there are many more, but I still stand by my statement we need to up the bar and release some classic material for CHRIST!
Holla back, please, I wanna hear with all the Spiritual Minded Hip-Hop Headz feel about this!
